The Orone variety is traditional to the Canary Islands and is included in official vegetable crop variety catalogs. In agronomic research, this tomato is considered a base for developing breeding lines with improved resistance characteristics to viral diseases.

Using molecular markers and backcrossing methods, genetic resistance to tomato mosaic virus, tomato spotted wilt virus, and tomato yellow leaf curl virus was introduced into the variety. The resulting lines retain the original yield and fruit quality indicators characteristic of the original variety.

Orone tomato is used both in open field conditions and in professional hydroponic systems. The variety is also widely known as a traditional component of the region's local gastronomic culture.
