The IGP classification system identifies four types of these tomatoes: Ciliegino (cherry), Costoluto (large ribbed), Tondo liscio (medium smooth), and Grappolo (cluster). Plants of these types are generally indeterminate and are grown in greenhouses or under film covers.
Distinctive features of the produce are early ripening, an intense sweet taste due to high sugar content, as well as firm consistency and long shelf life of the fruits. Outside the growing zone, flavor characteristics may differ significantly from the originals.
