The term Sarnese indicates a geographical area in Italy between Naples and Salerno, where San Marzano tomatoes are grown in volcanic soils. Produce from this zone holds DOP status, which confirms the authenticity of origin.

The plant is indeterminate. The fruits have an elongated plum shape, firm fleshy pulp, a small number of seeds, and thin skin that is easily removed. The flavor is characterized by sweetness, low acidity, and a pronounced aroma. The variety is considered the standard for the production of preserves, sauces, and pastes.
