The Hilsop variety, also known under the trade name Sun King, belongs to the species Sophora microphylla, which originates from New Zealand. The previously existing confusion with the species Styphnolobium japonicum was due to both plants belonging to the legume family and their former classification within the same genus, Sophora.
This variety is not related to the Japanese pagoda tree. The main external difference is the flowers: those of Sophora microphylla Sun King have a bright yellow color, while the inflorescences of Styphnolobium japonicum are creamy-white.
