The herbaceous rhizomatous perennial reaches a height of 50 to 100 cm and possesses large, broad, dark green leaves. The flower can reach up to 30 cm in diameter.

The inflorescence is distinguished by large dark purple or almost black bracts, resembling bat wings, and thread-like appendages up to 25 cm long. When cut, the flowers are short-lived and last for several hours.

The plant is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate temperatures below 13°C. For cultivation as an ornamental container crop, it requires bright, indirect light, high humidity, and well-drained soil.
