The variety was obtained by American botanist Frederick Vernon Coville through intraspecific hybridization of northern highbush blueberry by crossing the Brooks and Catswort forms. Introduced in 1920, the variety is among the first commercial types that laid the foundation for modern breeding of this crop.

Detailed modern agronomic characteristics of the variety, such as exact bush height or disease resistance, are practically not presented in professional reference books. Given the age of the variety, it is rarely found in industrial registers and is often confused with modern types or the strawberry variety of the same name.
