The Handa variety is a cultivar of Vanilla planifolia obtained as a result of a breeding program. The plant was selected following a manual self-pollination procedure. The variety is the first of its species to receive a European originator's certificate.
A key economic characteristic of the variety is its proven resistance to root and stem rot caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis vanillae. The pods of the plant are indehiscent, which allows them to ripen on the vine without the risk of splitting and loss of yield.
Morphologically, Handa is a semi-epiphytic vine, similar in structure to typical representatives of its species. The variety was created to solve the problem of genetic narrowness in plantations and to ensure sustainable cultivation of the crop while maintaining high aromatic properties.
