The variety originates from the municipality of Aranga in the province of A Coruña. This variety is a protected local population included in the germplasm collection of the Mabegondo Agricultural Research Center (CIAM).

Aranga is characterized by a high proportion of vitreous endosperm and adaptability to the humid climate of northern Spain. Researchers have used this genetic material to develop inbred lines and create improved forage hybrids, analyzing nutrient content indicators and the proportion of the ear in the total plant biomass.
