The B89 line was developed from the synthetic population BSSS(R)C1. It is used as a parent form in hybrid development and serves as a germplasm source for improving maize traits, as well as for gene mapping and studying their combining ability.
This line is a subject of molecular genetic research and has been used in experiments as a genetic donor for resistance to stalk rot caused by the fungus Fusarium graminearum. In comparative trials, it is used in crosses with other lines to evaluate hybrid yield.
