The «Creole» group of varieties is a result of folk breeding and an important genetic resource. These plants are used as a food crop for preparing traditional dishes, milling into flour, or as livestock feed, characterized by a high content of nutrients such as anthocyanins and carotenoids.
Morphological traits of the plants vary significantly: grain color can be yellow, red, blue, orange, or purple. The flint grain type with a hard pericarp is most common. These forms are characterized by high tolerance to local conditions, including water deficit, but they are inferior to modern hybrids in yield stability.
