F2 and F257 are fixed Flint-type maize inbred lines. The F2 line originates from the Lacaune population, and the F257 line is derived from a cross between the F120 and F192 lines. These objects are not commercial varieties intended for grain or silage production.
In agronomic and breeding literature, these lines are used as reference samples for conducting DUS tests. Morphological traits include weak anthocyanin coloration of the cob glumes, and for the F257 line, an orange color of the kernel crown. In scientific research, they are used to evaluate combining ability, study genetic diversity, and standardize descriptions.
The notation «F 2*F 257» denotes a combination or cross of two different breeding lines, not a single variety.
