The line originates from genetic material combining 50% European flint type and 50% dent type of the Reid Yellow Dent group. It was used as a component for obtaining single and complex hybrids, in particular, it was part of the commercial hybrid INRA 508.
During selection and physiological studies, the average number of ovules per ear for the F546 line was recorded at approximately 589 units. The line was also used in scientific work studying kernel number, the influence of temperature on development, photoperiod sensitivity, and the optimization of ear insertion height to reduce lodging.
