The hybrid is a transgenic variety created for pest protection. Genetic material from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis has been inserted into its genome, which ensures the expression of the truncated CryIAb protein.
The Bt-176 event modification is aimed at protecting the crop from damage by the European corn borer and the pink stem borer. In scientific trials, the variety was often used for comparison with the non-modified hybrid Occitan.
