The variety belongs to the sweet corn category intended for human consumption and is based on American breeding. In agronomic comparisons, it is used as a base (control) variety for evaluating the maturity dates of newer hybrids in the series.

Materials indicate that modern hybrids of the Dessert series, such as R68, R72, and R78, were created to improve characteristics that may have been insufficiently expressed in Dessert 70, including flavor qualities and resistance to viruses.
