The Zarja variety is a product of programs for the study and breeding of local corn genetic resources conducted at the University of Ljubljana. The hybrid belongs to the sweet corn group and is intended for fresh use at the milk stage.

The variety is characterized by early maturity, reaching technical ripeness faster than a number of common hybrids. Morphological development indicators are rated as medium. Research work on the variety included the study of its resistance to pathogens, fungal diseases, and pests, in particular to the European corn borer.
