The 3IIH6 line is breeding material intended for the production of hybrid seeds. During its development, selection was based on traits such as the ability to tassel at high planting density, resistance to northern corn leaf blight, and the retention of green leaf color until late stages of maturity.
External features include the presence of brace roots on the stem. The coloration of the spikelets and anthers of the tassel varies: upon emergence they are yellow, however, under the influence of light, the spikelets acquire a purple hue, and the anthers turn red.
