The Kneja 556 hybrid was developed by breeders at the Maize Institute in the town of Kneja. Methods of experimental mutagenesis were used in the breeding process, which allowed it to be categorized as a high-protein mutant hybrid.
The primary purpose of the variety was silage production. In the 1980s, the hybrid was widely distributed in Bulgaria, however, it is currently considered obsolete and is not included in the current lists of recommended varieties for cultivation.
