The L217 line is used in breeding programs for popcorn (Zea mays var. everta) and dent corn (Iowa Dent). It serves as a control parent for hybrid analysis and the study of genetic resources related to nitrogen use efficiency and the expansion coefficient of kernels during popping.
In experimental studies, this line is classified as belonging to the Iowa Dent heterotic pool. In the context of resistance to abiotic stresses, such as salt stress, the L217 line demonstrates higher sensitivity compared to a number of other studied samples.
The material is used as an international breeding standard in various scientific institutes and research centers, and not as a commercial variety for mass production.
