Varieties of the Mandan group are open-pollinated and are not modern commercial hybrids. They are distinguished by multicolored kernels and are classified predominantly as flour or flint corn intended for flour production or decorative purposes.
The origin of these varieties is linked to the traditional agriculture of the indigenous peoples of North Dakota. In the mid-20th century, samples of these varieties were donated to US state seed banks through the Oscar H. Will Seed Company.
