The variety is the result of centuries of folk selection by the indigenous peoples of Mexico, particularly the Zapotec. The plant is tall, reaching a height of 180 to 200 cm, and in some cases up to 3 meters.
The maturity period of the variety varies from 85 to 120 days. The kernels range in color from yellow-green to emerald and are of the dent type. The plant is characterized as hardy and drought-tolerant, and it is used for making flour, tamales, corn bread, and for decorative purposes.
