The Pau 1617 line is used by breeders as a recurrent parent to improve synthetic maize populations, increase their combining ability, and create new hybrids. It is often used as a tester when conducting top-cross trials to evaluate the breeding value of other lines.
In scientific publications, the line is considered as genetic material for recurrent selection cycles. Its primary objectives are to transmit high yield to progeny and to ensure a reduction in grain moisture at harvest for hybrid combinations. Detailed agronomic characteristics of the plant are not described in open sources.
