A key requirement for the container method is container depth, which must be at least twice the length of a mature root. For Imperator or Danvers types, containers 30–40 cm deep are required, while round or shortened varieties such as Parisian and Chantenay allow for the use of containers 15–20 cm deep. Priority is given to selecting varieties with a compact habit, which ensure productivity in limited space conditions.

The technology eliminates soil crusting and physical obstructions common in open field cultivation, thereby reducing the risk of root deformation. However, the crop requires strict moisture control, as irregular irrigation leads to root cracking. Mineral nutrition must be balanced with an emphasis on phosphorus and potassium, avoiding excess nitrogen, which triggers unwarranted foliage growth. The advantage of this method is the use of artificial substrates, which minimize contact with soil pathogens and nematodes.
