Double Flowering in Petunia × hybrida

Petunia x atkinsiana D. Don

Double flowering in petunia is a genetically determined mutation in which stamens are replaced by petaloid structures. This trait reduces plant fertility and makes them more vulnerable to precipitation and nutritional deficiencies.

In the reference 7 varieties crop Garden petunia, where this is mentioned in the description.

Double flowering in Petunia × hybrida is a qualitative morphological trait that is recorded during variety evaluation. The mutation leads to the partial or complete replacement of the flower's reproductive organs with additional petals, forming structures ranging from a light degree of doubling to dense multi-petaled inflorescences.

This morphological feature is accompanied by biological sterility due to the reduction of anthers, which makes the plant dependent on nutritional conditions. At the same time, double-flowered forms exhibit low moisture resistance: the accumulation of water in dense flowers triggers rotting and the development of pathogens.

During the seed propagation of hybrids, this trait is often subject to segregation; therefore, vegetative cuttings are used in commercial floriculture to maintain double flowering. Adverse environmental conditions during cultivation also lead to bud deformation and a decrease in the commercial quality of the product.
