The trailing habit of petunia is not a standardized term and is described through a combination of quantitative shoot length metrics and qualitative traits regarding their growth direction.

To evaluate petunias, shoot length is measured in centimeters, which allows for the differentiation of cultivar groups: from compact bush forms with shoots up to 20 cm to trailing (ampelous) types, the length of which reaches 120 cm. The growth direction of the shoots determines the cultivar classification: ampelous forms are characterized by soft, downward-directed shoots; spreading (cascade) types feature initial upward growth followed by cascading; and bush forms are characterized by growth predominantly upward and outward.

Shoot characteristics dictate agrotechnical requirements: cultivars with high vigor require increased substrate volumes, intensive fertilization, and early sowing dates using supplemental lighting. Unlike bush forms, which often require pinching, ampelous forms are evaluated based on their genetic ability to maintain ornamental quality and develop biomass without constant intervention.
