Perennial ryegrass lodging resistance is visually assessed on a scale from 0 to 5. A score of 5 is assigned when plants maintain a fully upright position, whereas 0 corresponds to severe lodging, where stems are inclined by more than 60 degrees or are lying on the ground. Intermediate values are determined by the angle of inclination: plants with a deviation of less than 30 degrees are rated at 4, and those with a deviation from 30 to 60 degrees are rated at 2.

The trait is varietal and depends on the genetic characteristics of the crop, including ploidy, as well as cultivation conditions and nitrogen fertilizer application rates. Lodging of the stand negatively affects the development of reproductive organs and the pollination process. Furthermore, lodged crops create critical difficulties during seed harvesting, causing significant yield losses due to the inability to perform effective direct combining.
