St. John's wort productivity

Hypericum L.

The productivity of St. John's wort is determined by the above-ground biomass yield during the mass flowering phase, which ensures the maximum content of medicinal substances. The assessment includes an analysis of the crop structure and the balance between the volume of raw material and the concen…

In the reference 4 varieties crop St. John's wort, where this is mentioned in the description.

When cultivating St. John's wort, productivity is measured by the mass of fresh or dry herb, including stems, leaves, and inflorescences. For cultivars, field yield reaches 9.5–14.7 t/ha, whereas under controlled environment lighting with optimized light, figures can reach 3.12 kg/m². In natural populations, productivity is significantly lower and usually varies from 13 to 18 g/m².

The most important factors for yield formation are the age of the plantation and agrotechnical practices. The plant demonstrates maximum performance in the 2nd–3rd years of growth. When assessing the yield, agronomists consider not only the total mass but also the percentage ratio of plant morphological parts, as the accumulation of target compounds, such as hypericin, directly depends on the proportion of leaves and flowers in the harvested biomass.
