Dry Rot of Melon

Cucumis melo L.

The term describes necrotic lesions on melon fruits, stems, and roots caused by the fungal pathogens Fusarium semitectum, Paramyrothecium foliicola, and Macrophomina phaseolina. The disease is characterized by the formation of dry, corky spots or sunken ulcers without tissue liquefaction.

The pathogen Fusarium semitectum causes corky dry rot of fruits, especially during the post-harvest period, with lesions often localized at sites of mechanical damage. The pathogens Paramyrothecium foliicola and Macrophomina phaseolina infect the root collar and stems, inducing the appearance of dry, friable necroses that are brown or black in color.

Unlike soft rots, tissues affected by dry rot of melon do not undergo pronounced liquefaction and do not produce an unpleasant odor. In international classification, there are no specific resistance genes or intraspecific race differentiation of pathogens tied exclusively to the name "dry rot."
