Chickpea plant height

Chickpea plant height ranges from 20 to 100 cm, with average values under production conditions typically between 45 and 60 cm. This trait has a positive correlation with yield, as taller plants have the potential to develop a greater number of productive nodes and pods.

To ensure efficient mechanized harvesting, varieties with a height of 45–75 cm and a height of the lowest pod attachment of at least 20–25 cm are preferred. Short-stature forms, especially those with pods attached close to the soil surface, lead to significant harvest losses when using combine harvesters.

Chickpea plant height is a variable trait dependent on moisture conditions, soil fertility, and sowing dates. During dry periods or with late sowing dates, the development of the above-ground part is often restricted, resulting in the formation of shorter plants.
