Variety traits
Helianthus annuus L.
An important morphometric indicator that determines productivity and harvesting efficiency, measured as the distance from the soil surface to the point of capitulum attachment.
In the reference 1 147 varieties crop Sunflower, where this is mentioned in the description.
According to state variety testing protocols, measurements are taken before harvest on a representative sample of plants. Height is defined as the distance from the soil surface to the point where the capitulum attaches; less frequently, it is measured to the center of the face of the capitulum.
The range of variability for the species is extremely wide: from 60 cm in dwarf lines to 5–6 meters in ornamental forms, while commercial early-maturing hybrids typically vary between 164–175 cm. This trait is highly dependent on genotype, plant density, water availability, and soil fertility.
Plant height directly affects the efficiency of mechanical harvesting: excessive height or bending of the stem near the capitulum can lead to yield losses. Although tall plants often form a higher potential yield, they require significant resources and may be less stable under adverse conditions.
