Heat tolerance — Cauliflower

The ability of cauliflower to maintain generative development and curd structure at temperatures above 22°C. A critical trait that prevents head deformation and the cessation of its formation under heat stress conditions.

Optimal growth parameters for cauliflower are achieved at temperatures of 15–20°C. Exceeding the 22–24°C threshold triggers heat stress, which manifests as curd looseness, leaf protrusion through the inflorescence, the appearance of bracts, and discoloration. At temperatures above 35–40°C, photosynthetic activity is critically reduced, leading to nutrient deficiency and the loss of marketable yield.

The evaluation of heat tolerance is based on physiological and morphological criteria. The former includes the thermostability of cell membranes, determined by the percentage of relative cell injury, and the analysis of heat shock protein synthesis. Morphological evaluation includes recording the variety's ability to set a dense curd and its growth dynamics under high-temperature conditions compared to non-adapted samples.
