The plant is an ancient wild form exhibiting a perennial life cycle. The aerial part dies back at the end of spring, the plant enters a summer dormancy period, and grows again in autumn. It forms dense clumps and develops small bulbs at the base.
Compared to cultivated leek varieties, the plant is more slender, with stems ranging from pencil size to finger thickness. The leaves, stems, and bulbils are edible, possessing an onion flavor with hints of garlic. The crop is undemanding, resistant to diseases, and does not require annual replanting.
