The variety is the result of selective breeding among 268 promising hybrid combinations derived from more than 23,000 parent lines. The plant is not a genetically modified organism.

The primary economic advantage of the variety is the high artemisinin yield, reaching 54.5 kg/ha. Accumulation of this compound occurs primarily in the glandular trichomes located on the leaves, flowers, and flower buds of the plant.
