The Aalter troshaver variety is an old oat landrace with a compact, cluster-like inflorescence shape, which distinguishes it from spreading varieties. The variety name translates from Dutch as 'cluster oat'.
The plant possesses high adaptability to cultivation on various soil types, including nutrient-poor areas. The traditional cultivation cycle includes spring sowing in March–April and harvesting in August.
Currently, the variety is used in craft brewing due to its specific flavor qualities. Research is also being conducted on the use of oat processing by-products for the production of biomaterials, such as paper and natural dyes.
