The variety KARDINAL belongs to the Begonia × cheimantha group (Lorraine begonia). Literature also contains references to this variety in the context of Begonia × hiemalis (Elatior begonia) classification.

The plant is susceptible to the disease caused by the pathogen Fusarium foetens. Symptoms of infection include wilting, vascular necrosis, and dull leaf coloration, which lead to plant death.
