LUBBERTUS H.KOPPE
10 August 2026
The plant belongs to the Begonia Rex Cultorum group and is characterized by a compact rhizomatous growth habit. The leaf blade has a curled shape, a velvety surface, and a dark color, which may show silvery, blue, or dark red shades, as well as light or lime-yellow veins. At maturity, the plant height is 25–40 cm.
During the spring-summer period, the begonia is capable of producing flower stalks with small pale pink flowers, which are of secondary importance compared to the foliage. The variety is sensitive to direct sunlight, which can cause burns, and excessive watering, which triggers rhizome rot. In trade, it is often found under the names Black Mambo and Black Fang, which causes confusion in variety identification.
