The crop has been historically cultivated in Galicia and belongs to the same subspecies group as Siberian kale or Hanover salad. The plant is characterized by a high capacity for fresh biomass production and is used as a food crop, suitable for fresh consumption, and as a fodder crop.
The plant is hardy and well-adapted to environmental conditions, demonstrating increased resistance to a number of pests compared to other local leafy crops. With early sowing dates, sensitivity to Lepidoptera pests is observed, affecting the marketability of the leaves.
The leaves of the crop are tender and sweet, characterized by a low-calorie composition with content of fiber, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Since NABICOL GALLEGO represents a collection of family varieties, fixed characteristics for plant height or maturity groups do not exist for it.
