The Imola variety was developed by crossing KWS UK breeding material with the Navajo variety, followed by pedigree selection to stabilize resistance traits to pathogens.
In scientific literature, the variety is widely used as a control sample when studying light leaf spot caused by the fungus Pyrenopeziza brassicae. Resistance is provided by the presence of a specific resistance gene that inhibits pathogen sporulation, causing the formation of necrotic spots on the leaves.
