The variety was created by the method of individual selection of monoecious plants over five years based on crossing a local population and Ukrainian varieties. In Serbia, the variety is also known by the name Novosadska konoplja.

The plant belongs to the group of "southern" varieties and is classified as industrial hemp. The variety is being studied as a source of biomass and seeds. Analyses show a THC content at the level of 0.16% and the presence of CBD, CBC, CBG, and terpenes in the product composition.

In a number of sources, the variety Helena is erroneously confused with the Polish variety Henola, which is an independent breeding form with different characteristics.
