The Princess variety (for example, 'Princess' or 'Princess Caroline') is an ornamental hybrid, the breeding of which is aimed at obtaining sterile or low-fertility plants to prevent their uncontrolled spread.

Unlike forage species, such as Cenchrus purpureus, these plants are used exclusively for landscaping parks and gardens. They are characterized by a compact size and are valued for the aesthetic qualities of their foxtail-type inflorescences and decorative leaf coloration.
