The variety Sunny Cassa was discovered in the Netherlands as a spontaneous mutation in a group of plants of the variety Cassa. The main morphological difference is the color of the inflorescences, which in this variety is dark yellow, while the remaining structural features of the capitulum correspond to the parent variety.

In scientific literature, the variety is mentioned as a culture susceptible to the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), and is therefore used in laboratory studies for the mass rearing of populations of this pest.
