The plant forms erect clumps 90 to 150 cm in height. Leaves are gray-green, lanceolate or elliptical, deeply dissected, with soft pubescence on the underside and less prickly than those of other Cirsium species. Erect stems have a purple hue.
Flower heads are violet-purple or purple-pink in color and resemble pincushions. Flowering occurs from May to August. The variety prefers sunny or semi-shaded areas with moist, rich soils and tolerates low temperatures well.
