SP-1 (Super Pollenizer SP-1) is a technological tool in commercial watermelon cultivation. Its primary function is to provide high-quality and prolonged flowering necessary for the pollination of triploid hybrids, which are incapable of producing viable pollen themselves.
The plant is distinguished by small leaves, heavily branched vines, and a tendency for intensive formation of male flowers. The fruits are small in size and have fragile rinds prone to cracking, which makes them unsuitable for sale or transport.
The pollinator variety is selected based on pollen viability and high productivity, as well as the ability to maintain active growth throughout the season to ensure effective synchronization with the flowering of the main triploid plants.
