In its natural environment, the plant is a shrub or small tree up to 6–10 meters in height. The crop is characterized by slow growth, seedlings enter the fruiting stage at the age of 5 to 15 years, with fruiting typically occurring in the period from winter to spring.
The fruits have a cylindrical shape up to 10–12 cm long. The color of the rind and pulp varies from green and yellow to pink, red, and nearly black. The taste of the pulp is acidic, with a pronounced citrus profile.
The species possesses natural resistance to root Phytophthora and is considered a source of genetic material for resistance to citrus greening disease. Numerous breeding forms and hybrids have been developed based on this species.
