The plant is an evergreen shrub or a small tree 1 to 3 meters in height with thorny branches. The leaves are lanceolate, dark green and glossy; the flowers are small, white, and strongly fragrant.

The fruits are the smallest among all citrus, reaching about 1 cm in diameter. They have a round shape, a bright orange color, contain large seeds, and their taste is characterized as sour and bitter. The plant fruits year-round and is sensitive to indoor growing conditions.
