The name Brindisino encompasses several local melon types, such as Brindisino grosso, Brindisino allungato, Brindisino a fasce, and Brindisino sub-sferico. These varieties have been historically maintained by local farmers in the provinces of Brindisi and Taranto as part of the region's genetic biodiversity.
The plants are traditionally grown under dry farming conditions. This group includes "winter melons" (Cucumis melo var. inodorus), which are characterized by good keeping quality. Harvest of such types is often carried out 10–20 days before full physiological maturity to ensure fruit preservation during the winter period.
Morphological traits of the fruits vary depending on the type: they can be oval, round, or ribbed, and have white or yellow skin, sometimes with mottling. The flesh of these melons is typically juicy and aromatic. These varieties are not industrial hybrids and represent genetically diverse landrace material.
