GL Ferdinand is an oilseed pumpkin breeding line developed for the production of seeds used in the food industry, including for pumpkin seed oil production. The variety is not intended for cultivation as a summer squash for the production of young fruit.

The breeding of the variety is aimed at increasing yield and resistance to diseases, including Zucchini yellow mosaic virus. Since oilseed pumpkin and summer squash belong to the same botanical species Cucurbita pepo, the variety is sometimes mistakenly classified as a summer squash in general species lists.
