In the international system for the protection of plant varieties, Pueblo is used as a reference variety when describing the morphological traits of zucchini. Specifically, it serves as a standard for identifying the yellow-green color of the ring on the inner side of the female flower corolla.

The name is also encountered as a collective designation for a group of local landraces of Cucurbitaceae crops historically cultivated by the indigenous peoples of the Southwestern United States. Commercial characteristics, such as yield or maturity group, are absent for this designation in specialized documentation.
