The variety was obtained through breeding and selection from a local carrot population acquired in southern Turkey. Over years of breeding work in California, traits for root shape, intensity of purple coloration, and resistance to premature flowering were stabilized.
The roots have a purple color both on the exterior and in cross-section, sometimes with a white or yellow core. The plant is characterized by pronounced zonation and a high level of antioxidant activity due to the accumulation of phenolic compounds and anthocyanins. The variety is open-pollinated and is often used in scientific research as a model sample of colored carrots.
