The Dianthus caryophyllus variety bred by Leonard E. Carrier is a plant with pink flowers that open fully without damage to the calyx. This variety possesses resistance to soil-borne diseases, particularly to Fusarium oxysporum.

The name Melody is also used for other representatives of the genus. These include Dianthus deltoides with a height of about 15 cm with bright red flowers, as well as a breeding variety with pink-lavender double flowers and a compact habit.
