The Ar501 strain, belonging to the FaTG-3 group, was discovered in wild tall fescue in Spain. It is used to improve the qualities of pasture grasses by providing protection against pests and abiotic stresses.
A distinctive feature of the strain is the absence of ergoalkaloid synthesis, which causes toxicosis in animals. Instead, the endophyte produces peramine and lolines, which provide protection against insect pests without adversely affecting livestock health.
The endophyte is transmitted vertically through the seeds of the host plant, with transmission efficiency increasing under lower temperature conditions. The presence of Ar501 in plant tissues contributes to increased plant survival and pasture longevity.
